The Challenge

This opportunity is for a Senior Director to lead the Ice & Beverage COE (Center of Excellence). This role reports into the Executive Director of Refrigeration Technology. The position’s responsibilities include leading a team of engineers to develop innovative features and products including but not limited to ice and beverage features for refrigerators and freezers, water filtration products for refrigerators, freezers, under-counter and whole home systems and technical ownership of free standing appliance products such as water softeners and water heaters. The role includes growing the Filtration Micro-Enterprise. The leader must have an entrepreneurial spirit for creating new business opportunities for rapid business growth. Forging strategic partnerships and developing innovative suppliers is a crucial part of the role. The role also requires delivering on NPI programs, meeting cost out targets and a continuous drive to reduce service calls associated with Ice and Water. The leader in this role must provide a work environment that is conducive to innovation and creative thinking including providing a world-class lab for the team to develop new concepts into winning products.

What you will Do

Essential Responsibilities

  • As Senior Director, demonstrate creative, strategic and leadership skills to lead the Ice & Beverage COE. This includes developing products that will substantially grow the Filtration Micro-Enterprise.

  • Demonstrate a deep technical knowledge of water products and water filtration including the requirements and agency approvals necessary to put them in production.

  • Lead the team to develop and design winning products.

  • Ownership of business goals in cost out and improving quality.

  • Create strategic relationships with suppliers to develop winning products including working closely with the Sourcing team to pick the right suppliers upfront.

  • Shape agency testing and certification requirements with active involvement at WQA, IAPMO, NSF and UL.

  • Lead Growth Playbook and S2 activities for the COE such as developing project scope files with documented assumptions and best estimate of program resources and product cost and drive to get key projects from the multi-year strategic plan funded.

  • Lead the strategy to integrate Ice and Beverage features and products into the connected (IoT) strategy of the business.

  • Facilitate the growth of the technical capabilities of our suppliers and external partners.

  • Work with the global Haier team on new Ice & Beverage technology and product development.

  • Partner closely with product management and IDO to specify and design products that will win in the market.

  • Provide the Ice & Beverage team a world-class engineering development lab where ideas can move quickly from concept, to working prototypes, to samples that can be fully evaluated against all requirements.

  • Develop advanced filtration media and the manufacturing process to produce the media.

  • Lead and develop the team in the areas of product design, reliability and craftsmanship to make sure consumers have a great ownership experience.

  • Lead design reviews within the team and pull in experts from outside the team to make sure designs are robust and various options are analyzed.

  • Make key trade-offs in risk, cost, quality and schedule to meet business objectives.

  • Strong advocate for Product Architecture that will drive modular design and support Manufacturing in DFMA activities.

  • Strong advocate of the iNPI process.

  • Demonstrate strong presentation skills required to advance winning concepts and work cross functionally with Product Management, Marketing, IDO, Manufacturing, Quality and the global Haier business team.

  • Assign and prioritize engineering work for the design team and in the lab between NPI, cost out, quality and advanced development.

  • Establish a proven track record of building a strong and capable team.

  • Demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively with people at all levels to meet business objectives.

  • Demonstrate ability to champion business compliance and employee safety with training and by following EHS guidelines.

  • Demonstrate the ability to develop and guide engineers on their career path for a team of approximately 30 people. This includes writing performance appraisals, coaching, giving feedback and participating in the Talent Review Process.

  • Demonstrate attention to detail to make sure agency and product documentation is complete and accurate.

  • Demonstrate a proven track record of meeting business goals for Intellectual Property (IP).

  • Establish strong working knowledge of the Ice and Beverage IP landscape and demonstrate the ability to work with the IP team in Legal to make strategic business decisions.

  • Ensure COE documentation is retained appropriately so key information and configuration management is available in the future.

  • Drive documentation creation for key items such as Standing Instructions, Design Record Books, Design Guides and Design Practices to help make the team more effective and efficient in the future.

  • Facilitate the growth of the technical capabilities of our suppliers and external partners.

What you need to Succeed

Qualifications/Requirements

  • BS degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent technical degree.

  • Experience leading design engineering teams.

  • Self-starting leader with 10 or more years of product design experience and 15 years of engineering experience with excellent verbal, written communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to work in a global environment and participate in global conference calls outside normal work hours (20:00-23:00 Eastern Time Zone)

  • Ability to travel to refrigeration production facilities and suppliers (Approximately 25% of the time)

  • Advanced computer skills - high proficiency in Microsoft products and ability to grasp new systems quickly.

  • Strong project management and analytical/problem solving skills with demonstrated ability to scope and analyze cross-functional problems to generate/implement solutions.

Desired Characteristics

  • 5 years or more of Ice and Water design experience (Filtration, Icemaking, Water Valve Design..etc)

  • Experience with NSF, WQA, IAPMO, or other relevant certifications

  • Awareness of Drinking Water Standards (ex: NSF 42, 53, 55, 401)
