The Challenge

The Senior Cost Engineer - Plastics is responsible for developing accurate and complete cost models and tooling that will be used within GE Appliances’ products. These estimates will be used to determine product development feasibility, cost forecasts, and to identify cost savings opportunities throughout the product life cycle.

What you will Do

Job Description

Responsible for component cost analysis throughout program life.

  • Provide subject matter expertise to support engineering and purchasing; analyze supplier quotes and reach agreement on appropriate piece cost and tooling cost using costing methods.

  • Establish piece cost and investment targets and provide negotiation support for new business placement and design changes.

  • Understand the elements of piece cost and investment for various manufacturing processing typical in the production of assigned commodities. Research the cost structure (including materials and manufacturing methods) used with advanced technology components.

  • Work as part of various cross functional teams to utilize material cost/design knowledge to drive cost of poor-quality improvements and to identify cost savings opportunities.

  • Function in an advisory role to senior leadership in the cost analysis

  • Perform and manage various simple to complex “should cost” analysis to help manage product cost including preparation of Bottoms-up, Rough Order of Magnitude (RoM) and Parametric cost estimates

  • Support Value Engineering and tear down events with key suppliers to identify cost savings opportunities

  • Determine cost targets and cost management rationale for Sourcing / Procurement

  • Evaluate costs of equivalent supplier products for best value

  • Utilize should cost methodology throughout the design and sourcing / procurement process

  • Monitor Manufacturing, Procurement and Engineering activities to evaluate risk and progress of material cost reduction implementation plans

  • Prepare Independent Cost Estimates for comparison to bottoms up proposal estimates

  • Develop best practices guidelines for engineering team to achieve cost improvements

  • Support continuous improvement of estimating techniques

  • Improve day-to-day procurement and engineering practices by infusing knowledge and processes into supplier negotiations and product development activities.

Additional Job Description

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (mechanical, electrical, industrial) or related technical discipline.

  • 5 years of experience in engineering or related field.

  • Demonstrated hands-on knowledge of plastic part designs and fabrication methods.

  • Familiarity with manufacturing processes and methods used with plastic parts (ie. injection mold, extrusions, in mold decorating, thermoforming, vacuum forming, blow molding, etc…).

  • Proficient analytical skills. Must have the ability to analyze and interpret advanced technical data.

  • Demonstrated ability to take ownership of issues, initiate actions, and make effective decisions.

  • Ability to take inputs from multiple functions and perspectives and translate it into an actionable plan while reconciling and integrating competing interests.

  • Understands big picture and aligns priorities with broader goals, measures outcomes, uses feedback to change as needed, evaluates alternatives, solutions oriented, seeks alternatives and broad input; can see connections within complex issues.

  • Demonstrates initiative and takes action proactively. Possesses the self-discipline to take actions before they are necessary, optimism towards achieving positive outcome and the competitiveness to translate a plan into action.

  • Strong problem solving, analytic, and project management skills. Goal-oriented and proactive in problem solving, coupled with creativity and a high-energy level

  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills. Ability to distill complex messaging into a concise, clear message.

  • Proficient computer skills: Must be adept in Microsoft Office (especially Excel).

  • Must possess the ability to learn specialized computer applications as necessary for the position (Windchill, Should Cost software)

  • Strong background in materials used in plastic part design

  • Experienced in the design of plastic parts, including knowledge and experience of mold flow analysis

  • Knowledge of plastic part tool design

  • Knowledge and experience of secondary processes and innovative processes required to achieve consumer facing aesthetic requirements

  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally as required of the position

What you need to Succeed

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree in Engineering and/or Business Administration.

  • Manufacturing or Industrial Engineering experience.

  • 7 years of experience in engineering or related field.

  • 3+ years of experience in cost management/analysis and supplier innovation/collaboration.

  • Financial analysis skills that center on understanding the financial impact of changes to design specification, manufacturing process, and supply chain costs.

  • Solid ability to use and demonstrate statistical and problem-solving tools.

  • Other skills that contribute to the success of this position include: Technical trouble shooting & problem solving, creative capabilities, applied engineering principles, manufacturing technologies, drawing comprehension, and technical writing ability.

  • Participated on cross-functional Teams where Sourcing played a key role in New Product Introduction, go to market strategy and various revenue streams / sales channels

  • Prior experience in a Sourcing procurement role with demonstrated experience in supplier management, negotiation and contract development.

Green Belt or Black Belt Certified.
