The Challenge

The Principal Supplier Quality Engineer is cross functionally responsible (along with Technology and Sourcing) for developing global water valve and heater strategies across the GEA business as well as assisting in the strategies across other Haier Group Companies. This responsibility, requires the gathering of data from multiple sources including Concessions, Warranty, Insurance Claims, Cost analysis, Delivery Performance Technical Design Capability and Manufacturing Capability to ensure that proper sourcing strategies are determined cross functionally and globally.

The Principal Supplier Quality Engineer is also responsible for all aspects of the supplier relationship from their identification as a viable candidate, through qualification, development and maintenance planning. Ultimate discretion for addition to the Approved Supplier List, part qualifications, continuous improvement, response to quality issues, and lastly proactive leadership through the Change Management process fall on the responsibility of the Principal Supplier Quality Engineer. Thus, the Supplier Quality Engineer is always one of the critical few strategy setters for dual sourcing, tariff mitigation, business development, and other far reaching business decisions.

The Principal Supplier Quality Engineer must have a broad business based acumen, with the ability to see a much bigger picture for strategy development of the managed commodities keeping business (not team) objectives in mind. The Principal Supplier Quality Engineer must be able to balance all business aspects of the commodities across many product lines with a global supply base that can be met with daily challenges.

What you will Do

  • Work Cross Functionally within GEA to develop Macro GEA strategies for multiple high risk EMD commodities, using multiple sources of data for these complex decisions.

  • Organize and facilitate global EMD strategies for high risk commodities with Haier, GEA, Mabe, and F&P teams.

  • Develop EMD expertise within SQ organization. Facilitate strategy around NPI execution/qualification, drawing support, and EMD training with controls SQ team.

  • Own all aspects of quality engineering and project management for suppliers of assigned high risk commodities. This includes qualification of suppliers, continuous ownership and development throughout the life-cycle of the supplier.

  • Utilize technical expertise in assigned commodity design and manufacturing equipment to work with suppliers in developing optimal product designs and manufacturing processes.

  • Initiate and lead the 9-step process with the use of Lean/Six Sigma tools by partnering with Technology to identify, understand and abate issues for NPI and C changes.

  • Conduct Critical Part Risk Reviews related to system performance, reliability or quality.Lead projects involving supplier moves, process and material changes. Support design change projects.

  • Interface with EMD suppliers, OEMs and manufacturing sites to improve EMD initiatives for the business.

  • Identify new EMD processes, tools and contacts within the industry – including new suppliers, instruments, or processes to further advance the business.

  • Champion the use of quality tools, Supplier Composite Scorecard and other data to identify and drive quality projects across all suppliers resulting in the overall improvement of supplier value to GEA (Delivery, quality, cost)

  • Monitor and resolve supplier process control performance issues by developing robust quality control plans and implementing sustainable corrective actions

  • Drive permanent resolution of manufacturing issues and consumer issues caused by supplier defects.

  • Lead projects involving supplier moves, process and material changes. Support design change projects.

  • Lead Supplier Quality initiatives, and develop activities to fix-or-exit problematic suppliers by implementing robust corrective actions or qualifying alternate suppliers.

  • Lead problem definition and reactive problem solving through containment, identification of root cause and corrective action with SCAR.

  • Ability to simplify complex information and concisely prepare both verbal and written executive summaries to the Appliance Leadership Team.

  • Lead and own Production Part Approval Process (PPAP) requirements associated with a change.

  • Perform annual audits to monitor supplier QMS (Quality Management System) compliance and effectiveness.

  • Identify areas for cost reduction across assigned supplier base including internal supplier process, quality improvements, Variable Cost Productivity (VCP) and material usage.

  • Develop a system of approval and control for the EMD supply base to be utilized by Sourcing Leadership to drive long term, sustainable improvements.

  • Leverage expertise to influence Sourcing global supplier EMD commodity strategy.


What you need to Succeed

  • Engineering or Technical degree (Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics)

  • Minimum 7 years' Supply Chain, Quality and/or Technical experience in manufacturing environment

  • Minimum 5 years of EMD related experience.

  • Strong background in applying statistical tools for process and product development and control (i.e. Gage R&R, Process Capability, Control Plans, SPC, Process Failure Mode Effects Analysis (PFMEA) and Design of Experiments (DOEs)).

  • Skilled and experienced with reading and understanding prints, dimensions and tolerances.

  • Experienced with problem solving tools and techniques (i.e. 8-D, 5 Whys, 7 Ways, DOE, eCAR, Fishbone, Pareto, Six Sigma, First Piece, PPAP).

  • Experienced with EMD, physical evaluation methods and measurement techniques.

  • Demonstrated project management and organizational skills

  • Ability and willingness to travel domestically and internationally

  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written

  • Demonstrated leadership to influence and drive change within a highly matrixed organization.

  • Demonstrated ability to independently develop, manage and implement aggressive project plans both globally and domestically

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with EMD manufacturing processes

  • Demonstrated ability to simplify complex information and prepare concise executive summaries

  • Prior international work experience & multi-lingual (Chinese, Spanish, etc.)

  • Demonstrated Lean Manufacturing experience

  • Six Sigma certified (Green Belt, Black Belt or Master Black Belt)

  • GEA training program graduate (OMLP, TLP, EEDP)

  • Master’s degree
