Principal Platform Engineer-Water Heaters
This opportunity is for an experienced and innovative Principal Platform and Program Manager. This is a hands-on engineering position in the Water Heater Technology group specializing in the design and development of new high efficiency gas water heater platforms. The engineer will be involved in design, prototyping, documentation, testing and evaluation of our next generation gas water heater platforms.
What you will Do
Responsible for scoping, mentoring and leading development of all gas water heater product families
Guide and shape product specifications for new gas water heater development teams
Provide program management of design and support function team members
Provide leadership and oversight of gas water heater platforms optimizing for safety, energy efficiency, performance, reliability, and cost while driving lean manufacturing principles
Provide leadership in, and a working knowledge of the Department of Energy (DOE), ANSI/CSA gas water heater standards and tests and provide recommendations to improve our performance in these tests
Understand and convey gas combustion principles
Understand manufacturability of component and subsystem designs
Baseline and study competitor designs and product performance
Ensure proper testing and evaluation of design configurations, with clean documentation of results
Specify and Guide development of gas water heater laboratory infrastructure and equipment
Guide factory process and equipment planning to ensure product safety, performance and reliability expectations are met
Understand and navigate the patent landscape regarding water heater technologies
Provide leadership in understanding of industry standards and specifications regarding conformance, codes, methods and performance related tests
Work within a cross functional group of engineering, marketing, sales, quality, sourcing and manufacturing to develop specifications for new innovative products and guide strategic technical direction
What you need to Succeed
BS degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent technical degree.
10 years minimum experience; minimum 5 years experience in product design and development, plus an additional 5 years platform and/or program leadership, including gas combustion and FVIR development
Self-starter with solid written and oral communication skills
Demonstrated problem solving skills with a passion for learning
Ability to work effectively in a cross-functional organization
Ability to work in a global environment
Fluent use of Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint and Word software packages
Working knowledge of PTC (Pro/Engineer) Creo 3D design software
MS degree in Mechanical Engineering
20+ years experience in product design and development.
Design experience with water heaters or related water heater technologies
Exposure to boiler, HVAC, hydronic industry, cooking appliances or gas combustion products
Knowledge of water heater industry performance evaluation methods
Experience designing parts with Pro/Engineer, SolidWorks, Unigraphics NX, or other software
Ability to design, build, and execute a test plan and clearly present data to a diverse group and openly debate technical issues
Ability to quickly frame up a problem by developing a test set up with instrumentation, developing and running experiments, and providing recommendations
Ability to work multiple design options in parallel and use engineering logic to narrow selection to optimum design.
