Principal Design Engineer-Structures COE
This Principal design engineer role within the Structure Center-of-Excellence (COE) team is responsible for the design, development and implementation of electric and gas cooking appliances. This hands-on position requires creativity and technical ability to identify and develop innovative, cost effective and timely engineering solutions to meet key business metrics. He/she will own the process of designing, prototyping, testing, evaluating and implementing designs as part of the GE Appliances change control process.
What you will Do
Own design and implementation of new innovative structure and thermal system features ensuring that platform/COE targets are met.
Help guide multi-generational technology development and execution around critical technologies necessary to maintain a competitive advantage within the industry.
Generate Intellectual Property to Protect GE Appliances technology.
Provide leadership and oversight of structure and cavity subsystems to optimize safety, agency, performance, quality, service, manufacturing, and cost.
Mentor engineers in fundamental sciences, application, and product design.
Work within a cross functional group of engineering, marketing, sales, quality, service, sourcing, and manufacturing to develop specifications for new innovative products.
Work with manufacturing teams to ensure Design for Manufacturing & Assembly (DFMA) is considered during part design and implementation.
Run design through Appliance Dimensioning System including the use of GD&T, 3D tolerance analysis, gaging development, and 3D qualification.
Support the implementation of chosen design concepts within the manufacturing facility by participating in lean events and executing product builds.
Apply statistical design principles to ensure products are robust to variation.
What you need to Succeed
Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineer is required.
Minimum 10 years in thermal/ heat transfer design and development within appliances or adjacent industry.
Advanced knowledge of structural and thermal management designs utilized in cooking products.
Self-starter with passion for innovative engineering design as well as exceptional analytical and problem-solving skills.
Proficient in 3D modeling software such as Creo, Solidworks, or equivalent.
Ability to work effectively in a cross-functional global organization.
Ability to balance effective use of finite element analysis and other predictive modeling with a hands on/experimental approach to study designs in a lab environment.
Passion for teamwork and above average verbal, written and interpersonal skills.
Advanced computer skills with high proficiency in Microsoft products and ability to grasp new systems quickly.
Some travel within the Southeastern US or Mexico to support team design and production activities (approximately 25%).
Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineer is preferred.
Minimum of 10 years of sheet metal product development experience.
Demonstrated experience with statistical tools, reliability test design and qualification.
Proficiency in submission and analysis of Intellectual Property.
