The Challenge

The GE Appliances, (GEA), AIE (Advanced Industrial Engineer) will be a member of the New Product and Process Introduction team. The AIE will use their experience, knowledge and importantly their creativity to lead and maintain the optimization of new complex manufacturing processes and systems on the front end of the product and equipment/process development lifecycle. The AIE is responsible for managing and executing scientific methods to devise efficient systems that integrate workers, machines, and materials, ensuring compliance with standards and executed within the project or program key deliverables.

What you will Do

Technical Responsibilities:

  • Provide industrial engineering principles to NPIs (New Product Introductions) relating to machine, equipment and human capability. Primary focus:

  • Design for Manufacturing & Assembly

  • Bill of Process

  • Factory & Materials Flow

  • Human Capability

  • Utilize cross-functional groups to ensure that project tooling, equipment and processes are compatible with the entire value stream. Efforts should include: right-sized equipment, workstation design, material presentation, standardized work and single piece flow. Use data and statistics to characterize delivered manufacturing process capabilities in qualifying the release of processes and equipment.

  • Investigate new operating methods for appliance manufacturing and recommend applicable new technologies to business leaders to optimize manpower and increase efficiency.

  • Maintain the master BoP (Bill of Process) for assigned manufacturing site(s). Ensuring, new projects comply with the BoP. Provide support to the Lean and product teams on Bill of Design (BoD), Bill of Materials (BoM) and PFEP (Plan for Every Part) activities.

  • Utilize discrete event simulation software to plan and optimize new assembly lines and processes prior to execution. Work with the Advanced Manufacturing Engineers and Plant Engineers to identify, scope, and execute projects on existing process to improve inefficiencies.

Standards and Compliance:

  • Ensure all equipment complies with Industry and Governmental Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) standards.

  • Utilize Human Organizational Performance (HOP) principles to ensure that all equipment / tooling / processes are implemented with the health and safety of the operators in mind.

  • Work with functional leaders to ensure equipment & processes support business initiatives of Bill of Process (BoP), Lean Manufacturing, Ergonomic Design and Total Productive Maintenance (TPM)

Cross-functional Work and Leadership:

  • Work with factory operations and Lean teams to understand the Value Stream and project impact. Ensure material flow, workstation setup, model mix, etc. are considered when workstations / equipment are designed.

  • Work with design team to ensure Design for Manufacturing & Assembly (DFMA) is considered on part design.

  • Utilize the 9-Step Process for tooling and equipment design; consult Critical Process leaders as applicable to ensure development of robust processes for part / product generation. Work with cross-functional team to develop Manufacturing Control Plans (MCP) and Manufacturing Control Instructions (MCI).

  • Deliver guidance, and training for cross-functional team members with regard to industrial engineering. Provide documentation and training to maintenance and shop floor personnel to ensure seamless new equipment / process introductions.

  • Utilize technical and project experience to add to the APS (Appliance Production System) and AME teams’ body of knowledge to drive continuous improvement throughout the organization and company.


What you need to Succeed

Position Requirement

  • Experience with Human Capability and Discrete Event Simulation Software

  • Excellent project tracking and detailed planning skills required

  • Ability to work in large cross-functional teams and at multiple levels in the organization (both salaried and shop floor operators / skilled trades team members)

  • Good oral and written communication skills – will be expected to provide status report outs to cross-functional team and train other engineers

  • Demonstrated ability to take ownership of cross-functional program deliverables and ability to drive decisions based on the overall benefit to the company

  • Skilled in Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Auto Cad, Minitab, Scheduler and Outlook

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering or related discipline OR equivalent hands on industrial engineering experience with assembly manufacturing equipment and processes

  • 3+ years hands on experience with manufacturing equipment and process improvement

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or Master’s Degree in Engineering; Industrial Engineering with Human Factors/Ergonomics coursework preferred

  • Experience with Siemens Tecnomatix software (Factory Simulation, Process Simulate, Jack)

  • Knowledge of Predetermined Motion Time System (PMTS) concepts and Simulation software

  • Experience doing rebalance and allocating work to production work

  • Very creative talent with documented history of looking past "current state" and "current processes" to lead/foster/implement new initiatives, practical in nature

  • Prior NPI program experience

  • Six Sigma Certification Green Belt, Black Belt, or Master Black Belt

Working Conditions:

  • Working conditions are normal for a high-volume manufacturing environment.

  • Work may involve lifting of materials and product up to 30 pounds and working in and around heavy equipment.

  • Working in this environment requires the use of safety equipment to include but not limited to; eye safety glasses, hearing protectors, work boots, and hardhats.

  • These roles will require frequent walking in a manufacturing plant environment

  • Hours & Weekends: Working off-shift and weekends will be required during peak project times

  • 5-10% travel may be for domestic travel to supplier sites/ plants, etc.
